Reasons You May Consider Genetic Counseling

Preconception/Pregnancy Planning

  • Explore your family history to determine if there is an increased risk to have a child with a genetic condition or physical difference.
  • Learn about genetic screening to see if you or your partner carry genetic changes that could increase the risk of having a child with a genetic condition.

Fertility

  • Learn about genetic screening to see if you or your partner carry genetic changes that could increase the risk of having a child with a genetic condition.
  • Learn about preimplantation genetic testing options that are currently available, in conjunction with IVF, to screen embryos for genetic conditions.
  • Assess family history and discuss genetic carrier screening for egg and sperm donors.

Pregnancy

  • The number of prenatal screening options can be confusing. Meet with a genetic counselor to learn more about these screening options to aid in your decision making.
  • If you’ve received a high-risk screening result, a genetic counselor can help you understand the meaning of the results and what options are available to you.
  • If your doctor has expressed concern about an ultrasound finding, a genetic counselor can help explain the concerns and additional testing options that may be available.

Cancer

  • Some cancers can run in families and certain genetic changes may put individuals at a higher risk for developing certain types of cancer.
  • During a genetic counseling session, we can review your family history to assess if genetic testing is appropriate and explain the results of the testing.

Other Services

  • If you have any family history concerns, our genetic counselors can help determine if genetic testing may be appropriate for you.
  • If you’ve already had genetic testing performed and have questions about your test results, our genetic counselors can review those results and explain the meaning. If we feel you would benefit from an evaluation with a physician specializing in a particular genetic condition, we will help you find a genetics practitioner who is appropriate.
